The Regional Professional Development Center at Grand Oaks Elementary School is a community of learners committed to the highest quality of education for students, parents, staff, and the region. We provide a challenging, structured learning environment where students are supported academically, physically, socially, and emotionally.  We promote continued, lifelong learning for all students so they may become contributing, respectful members of society.

Historical Background

Grand Oaks Elementary was established in 1989 in the rural community of Marlow, located between the cities of Clinton and Oak Ridge.  Grand Oaks’ student population originated from the consolidation of the former Marlow and Shinliver Elementary Schools.  The building was initially designed to maintain 375 preschool through fifth grade students and has since expanded to add room for 80 more students.

 Grand Oaks became a Regional Professional Development Center (RPDC) beginning with the 2007-2008 school year. The RPDC uses a scientific research based approach to scientific and mathematical investigations within a comprehensive literacy framework. Staff members are highly qualified with extensive training in educational theory. These theories are used to drive decision making in regard to individualized student learning. A primary focus of the RPDC is to demonstrate “best practice” methods of instruction in an authentic classroom setting. This provides support for learning opportunities for teachers from the Anderson County system as well as, teachers from other systems. The staff also collaborates with area universities to provide high-quaility instruction to future teachers.

Facilities

Grand Oaks Elementary School consists of 27 classrooms and an office complex.  There is a well-equipped library/media center, 24-station computer lab, science lab, gymnasium, lunchroom and kitchen area, along with areas for speech-language services, guidance services, reading recovery, and a literacy training and conference room.  The campus covers approximately 30 acres, including a Nature Trail. Plans are currently underway to develop a wetlands area and outdoor classroom.
